Austria

Historic places

Journey through Austria’s rich history through its imperial palaces, towering fortresses, and historic churches. Explore the grand Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, former home to emperors, or admire the dramatic Hohenwerfen Castle, perched on a clifftop. Visit the Burg Kreuzenstein and step back in time for a medieval touch. Don’t miss St. Stephen’s Cathedral, a Viennese icon, or the stunning Melk Abbey, a baroque gem overlooking the Danube. Austria’s history is alive and ready to be explored, from royal palaces to mountain castles.

Melk Abbey

Melk Abbey is a Benedictine abbey above the town of Melk, Austria, on a rocky
outcrop overlooking the river Danube, adjoining the Wachau valley. It is just on hour away from Vienna and was founded in 1089 and was baroque in 18th century. Meanwhile it is an UNESCO world heritage and I enjoyed last summer a guided tour through the abbey with its imperial staircase, marble hall and famous library. This time I stayed in the stylish and peaceful Hotel Sans Sousi in Vienna.

Hallstatt

Hallstatt, idyllically located at Lake Hallstatt used to be the center of salt mining
already 3,000 years ago! The village is one of my favorite places in Austria as there is so much to do: visit the archeological museum, stroll between the historic fisherman houses and the spectacular graveyard, visit the salt mine or challenge yourself on the skywalk above the lake. The place to stay overnight, which I would call a perfect hide away, is Castle Fuschl, at lake Fuschl. Only 45 min away from Hallstatt.

Klosterneuburg

Klosterneuburg, a small wine village at the river Danube intrigued me with its abbey and the alter of Verdun and Austria’s oldest vineyard vom 1114 A.B.

Since it is only a 20 min drive from the inner city of Vienna, I also stayed there. I chose the hotel Palais Hansen Kempinski right at the heart of Vienna.
